Project Description
CH2MBarry, in joint venture with RPS, have been commissioned to work on the upgrade of three National Primary routes in County Donegal, which form part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). RPS CH2MBarry are currently taking the three schemes through Phases 1 to 4 of the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Project Management Guidelines, which includes Project Appraisal and Feasibility Studies, Route Selection, Design and Statutory Processes. The overall aim of the project is to address operational and safety issues on the three sections while improving connectivity to/from the region to other regions, cities and hubs. The three routes being addressed within the scheme:
- N15 at Ballybofey/Stranorlar Urban Region: The N15 is the primary link between Donegal, Sligo and Galway and experiences heavy congestion within the busy towns of Ballybofey and Stranorlar.
- N56/N13 Letterkenny to Manorcunningham: This route connects Letterkenny and the N56 route to the rest of the TEN-T network (N13 and N14). Current traffic volumes are high, with lack of alternative routes resulting in driver delay, collisions and poor network resilience.
- N14 Manorcunningham to Lifford/Strabane/A5 Link: This link is the National Primary route providing connectivity to Lifford on the eastern land border of Donegal, and subsequently to Northern Ireland. The route currently has sub-standard alignment characteristics, high collision rates and congestion. There is currently a proposed link road across the River Foyle to the A5 Western Transport Corridor (A5 WTC) in Northern Ireland, which any future scheme will take consideration of. The A5 is the primary link from Donegal and the North West to the N2 in Monaghan and onto Dublin.
The project is currently sitting at Phase 1 (Feasibility Stage), with Project Appraisal underway. The project website is available at
